The second vessel of 05 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), an indigenous project, for Indian Coast Guard named SUJEET was launched by Mrs. Seema Mittal, wife of Shri Sanjiv Mittal, Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on 25th May 2019. The first vessel of this class was launched by Hon. Raksha Mantri Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in February this year. The ongoing ship building project for five offshore patrol vessels is one of the biggest orders being executed by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard. Entirely designed in-house by GSL, these OPVs will form a formidable part of the Coast Guard fleet used for protection of territorial water of India.
The chief guest on this occasion, Sh. Sanjiv Mittal, CGDA, recognising the excellent efforts and achievements of GSL stated that the launch of 2nd OPV is another feather in the cap of GSL and is validation of confidence reposed by Government of India and Indian Coast Guard in indigenous ship building. CGDA also highlighted that, with increased maritime threat perception, induction of 5 OPVs under this contract will add to the maritime power of India. He also brought out that GOI has recently signed a contract for construction of two Advanced Missile Frigate with GSL for Indian Navy which will be a stepping stone for the GSL in construction of weapon intensive and technological advanced warship in future.
The ceremony was attended by Coast Guard commander (Western Seaboard) – ADG Shri K Natarajan, PTM, TM, DGP, Goa Shri Pranab Nanda, CMD, GSL Commodore B B Nagpal(Retd), PCDA ( Navy), Smt. Alka Sharma, IFA (WNC), Shri Anshu Khalko and various other senior officers of Ministry of Defence, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
